Tryfan Junction Award

The station building at Tryfan Junction has been meticulously restored by the Welsh Highland Heritage Group and their work has recently been rewarded at the National Railway Heritage Awards ceremony in London with the announcement that they have won the Volunteers Award for 2014. When the railway first reopened, Tryfan Junction was just a ruin, but over several years the building has been progressively returned to its original state as it was in the days of the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railway, a notable reminder of the railway's heritage and a landmark at the start of the Slate Trail which sets off from here up the line of the former Bryngwyn branch. Before and after views are shown below.

The Welsh Highland Railway Society contributed towards the cost of restoration. For the full press release see here.

South African Brake Van

The former South African brakevan, which did sterling service during the construction of Phase 4 of the railway is now in desperate need of some attention.
The main jobs are the fabrication and fitting of a new roof (the current one leaks badly and is beyond repair); some maintenance work on the doors and a complete repaint.

There is now an opportunity to do this work undercover in the Carriage Shed at Dinas over the spring/summer whilst one carriage set is based at Porthmadog.
A team leader is needed to take on this task as well as a small dedicated team to get the job done by the end of September.
If you would like to undertake this job or be part of the team please contact me.

Dafydd Thomas - e-mail: dafydd.thomas@festrail.co.uk or telephone 01248 681019.
